SEO Copywriting

SEO copywriting became popular just in the recent years. Obviously, in the 1950s in the absence of internet, no one was bothered about SEO.

However, you'll find examples of SEO copywriting in the landing pages, sales letters, product descriptions.

One of the most crucial elements of SEO Copywriting is keyword search.

There are tools, that will help you find the best keywords based on search volume, expected traffic and competitor's content.

Simple use of Google auto suggest search will also help you find the questions people ask on Google.

By answering those questions, not only will your content will most likely rank on Google, but it will also score high in reader's mind.

That's the purpose of SEO copywriting: find a keyword, write about, rank and write in a manner people will take action.

Freelance Copywriting

In addition to SEO Copywriting, another hot stuff is Freelance Copywriting.

It is not surprising.

After COVID-19 pandemic people were forced to work remotely.

Many were required to change their working ethic and many changed their career. Either way, the location freedom, freelance copywriting offers, is what people find attractive.

While, it might be wise to start your copywriting career in-house, for gaining faster and "real" experience, make your feet wet with freelance copywriting firstly, can be also a way.

In that case, you need to be prepared for almost no income in the first months. This is understandable right?

I mean who is going to pay you if you have no experience, no portfolio or no clients?

But again, if you are OK with that, you definitely have chance to proceed this way.

Moreover, you can build your freelance copywriting career from scratch, only as freelance copywriter.

This can be done in two ways.

Firstly, approach companies and offer your services.

Secondly, you can find open positions on Google.

In both cases, small portfolio of your work could help, but it isn't necessity.

Why?

The companies you want to search for are small, mostly one-man businesses. As they do not posses over a huge budget, it can be win-win situation.

They let you build up your portfolio, and you help them grow with their limited budget.

How to Land Your First Copywriting Job?

OK, if you still bear with me and you are enthusiastic about copywriting, but you have no experience, there are certain steps you need to take, when you want to land your first copywriting job.

You see, as there is no traditional copywriting education, you have to find your own way.

Study

The number one step you need to take is to STUDY.

You can't go to university to study copywriting, but there are a great quality books, courses and videos out there, that will help you starting your copywriting career.

Depending on the depth, you want to learn copywriting, you can choose the right source of information.

If you want to get tips on how to apply only the fundamentals of copy into your content, videos like this can help you.

When you want to understand copy deeper, you should get a book from copywriting expert. In that regard, David Ogilvy's On Advertising is a gold standard where to start.

Finally, if you want to start your copywriting career, the best way is enrol for copywriting course. If you are tight on budget, try FREE course.

However, if you are serious about copywriting, you might invest in course like this or one of AWAI's courses.

Practice

After you gained some copywriting knowledge, you want to practice.

As simple and obvious as it sounds, it's still surprising how many people will not apply what they learn.

Simply investing in books, courses or webinars and then don't use the knowledge in the practice is useless.

Do you agree?

Part of the practicing is also asking for feedback.

I know, you prefer not to receive feedback on your writing, especially when you are starting out, but honestly, this is the best way HOW YOU CAN GROW.

What other way is there to know if yours writing is great or if it sucks?

As soon as you realise that your writing is not perfect, just then you will be able to grow.

Don't let your ego stand in your growth.

Choose a Job

Lastly, you have to find a copywriting job you, that will fit you the best.

What does it mean?

You can, but you don't have to choose a niche.

Niche is a market area of same interest. What do you like to do, talk, write about?=>YOUR NICHE.

When it comes to the type of copywriting, you can think of in-house or freelance.

Previously, I wrote that upon starting out, many would choose to go for in-house agency.

This makes completely sense, as this way you will see experienced copywriters from first line.

You will be like a sponge in getting new knowledge.

After gaining some experience, the next step would be to start freelance copywriting.

This will give you an opportunity to choose projects, clients, location and even your pay rate.

Apart from niche and type, you might choose specialisation.

This isn't compulsory, but as more specific your writing becomes, as easier you'll become an expert, therefore, you can market yourself easier.

Do you prefer to write SEO copywriting, conversion copywriting, email sequences?

You can choose.

As more as specific you will be with your niche and specialisation, as easier it will be to get clients. At the same time, if you stay "general", you can become successful at copywriting as well.

Commit to taking at least one copywriting course so that you can learn the power of the written word. If you are tight on budget, it can be even a FREE course.

As you begin to craft effective copy, you will soon realise just how valuable this skill is and be glad that you decided to take it on!

What is important to realise is that, learning fundamental copywriting skills isn't necessarily difficult, however what can be more challenging is becoming a really great copywriter.
