Is Copywriting Easy to Learn?

You see, if you are affiliate marketer, you need to know copywriting.

You might not be into brand awareness, as you are not the product owner. But you'd need to know it, out of pure necessity for higher conversion rate.

That's why you might ask:Is Copywriting easy to learn?

Let me honest with you, copywriting isn't hard to start with. In fact, in the present digital era, we can easily say that to start with COPYWRITING, it's super easy. Even though, there isn't traditional copywriting education, it is much easier to start with Copywriting in 2023 than it was back in the 1950's.

There are two crucial questions that needs to be answered, though.

Where to learn copywriting? and How to master copywriting?

The best place for learning copywriting are online courses, and books. Hardly, you'll find other place to learn it. You need to pick one-two and learn from those.

As with everything, you don't want to get overwhelmed at first.

Secondly, the way how you will master it's...well, many would say more difficult, but it all depends on you. Before you consider deepen your copywriting knowledge, ask yourself: do I need to master copywriting? Chances are, that as an affiliate marketer, you wouldn't need to know everything about copywriting.

Probably, you will want to know how to write eye-catching and interest intriguing headlines, engaging leads, "bossy" call-to-actions, etc.

After you'll find your essentials, then the way how to master it is simple. Not easy, but simple.

Practice.

You will be reading a lot, mostly from the pros, but then it is about your writing. So, you will be the one to practice it. How often?

Ideally daily!

If you can't make it daily, then whenever when you will write piece of content, train your copywriting skills.

Yes, being skilful takes a time. At the same time, when you start, you will see your writing improving time-after-time.

Let me show you what else is there needed to learn copywriting and how you can start to apply the fundamentals today!

5 Qualities You Need to Have

Again, you don't have to be master in copywriting when your main income source is affiliate marketing but you need to know the fundamentals.

In order to learn and apply them every time your intent is readers' action, you should posses some qualities.

Some can be learned, some you should be born with. If you won't find yourself in the below paragraphs, you might consider hiring copywriter.

Potentially, using "writing assistant" can help as well.

Here you go, the QUALITIES!

Don't be Lazy to do Your Research

Research is one of the most crucial parts of any online content.

If you are content marketer, but especially if you are copywriter.

There are some questions you need to answer while doing your research.

Some questions are:

  • Who is Your Audience, who you write for? What are theirs Desires? Dreams? Fears?
  • What is the Product/Service you write About? Do You Know Its Strongest Parts? Flaws?
  • What is the purpose of your copy? Is it copy at all? Isn't just informative blog post enough?

Many people do make mistake and assume that copywriting is the same as content writing.

For the security sake:

The purpose of copywriting is to convert. While purpose of content writing is educate.

You can trust me when I say that the research for your content is at least 50% of your time. Some people do say, that copywriting consists of 90% research and just 10% of writing.

If you do your research, do it right!

This is what Joanna Wiebe from Copyhackers.com says about knowing your audience:

JoaNna Wiebe

“Your job is not to write copy. Your job is to know your visitors, customers and prospects so well, you understand the situation they’re in right now, where they’d like to be, and exactly how your solution can and will get them to their ideal self.”

Throw Away Your Ego (Audience is King/Readers First)

OK, how I should put this...You see, when you write you are often "occupied" with you, but if you want to be successful in any online writing, you need to get into the place of your reader.

You need to feel their emotions.

Their desires, wishes, worries...it is safe to say that this isn't easy.

Moreover, it can be though.

Yet, it is essential.

Be ready to be not understood in better case (worse case=>unpaid), your skin needs to be thick, especially if you work for large clients, everyone from CEO to janitor will have opinion on your copy.

Welcome to creative writing world.

Now, you at least know why famous songwriters can feel vulnerable.

I mean, who wants to feel like failure?

Trust me, you will feel like this when reading your first feedbacks.

Especially, it'll hurt when some unqualified folks will tell you their opinions.

If it is from PRO's?

Take it and learn from it.

Be OK With Feedback (Hmm...Criticism?)

Yes, take the feedback you will receive from someone who is an expert in copywriting and learn from it.

Even though, it might feel intimidating, it is necessary for your growth.

That's the way how BIG COPYWRITING NAMES started as well. Who says no, is lying to you.

As it was with every task, skill, or profession you ever started, with copywriting it will be the same.

Your first trial would probably stink.

That's OK. You need to learn from the feedback.

Yes, part of your beginnings is to be able to receive a feedback.

What can help you is to realise that the feedback you receive is feedback on your work and not on you personally.

How do you receive feedback if you are not in-house copywriter?

There are plenty copywriters who would be happy to give you feedback if you ask them.

Love Reading

Now, I don't mean reading billboards and magazines (although, you can also learn from).

I mean you need to love reading as such.

So, you'll have no problem to read 600 pages book about copywriting, marketing or psychology. They are all vital for understanding how to reach out to people on their emotional level.

Isn't the emotional connection all, what copywriting is about?

Also, it is safe to say you should be reading copy of other copywriters.

Online, offline, print.

You would be surprised, how much you can learn from emails of other companies.

If you don't have another gmail adres, I would encourage you to do so. Create one email adres especially for newsletters from companies in your niche.

That way, you can see what is working and what isn't.

That's how you will become better COPYWRITER.

So, yes, you need LOVE FOR READING!

Love Writing

If love for reading wasn't on your list, LOVE FOR WRITING had to be.

It makes totally sense, right?

In the end, it's copyWRITING.

However, when it comes to actual copywriting, some could be surprised about the writing volume.

You might say, that the Facebook ad from Microsoft has just one line.

True, but that's rather an exception.

Additionally, you read that writing could be just 10% of the actual job.

So, particularly in this case, the work was done on research.

Also, I don't think that the copywriter who wrote his one-liner is done for the rest of the week.

Most likely he would need to write other copy.

Maybe emails, product descriptions, or sales letter.

Not only actual writing is you need to do but also editing.

If you are as the majority, you will hate this!

Unfortunately, there really isn't better way to get skilled at copywriting as to read after what you read!

Believe it or not, the best way to do this, is to read it out of loud.

So, read aloud what you wrote, and you became better copywriter!

5 Steps to Write Your Copy

Ok, if you survived the description of personality you should be, bear with me.

In addition to expected qualities of copywriter, I am going to share with you, 5 Steps you can apply today, to improve your copywriting.

Of course, there is much more, you need to know.

But those 5 steps can help you to get basics good.

Benefits over Features

I am sure you heard that a lot.

When you write any (copy) material meant to sell, people want to know benefits rather than features.

In other words, they want to know how it will help them and not what it does.

Joe Sugarman:

“Every product has a unique personality and it is your job to find it.”

Yeah, humans are just lazy.

So, make their life easier, by telling them what benefits they'll have after buying the product you promote.

Don't make it too hard for them to find it out.

Chances are, you will losse them.

People will buy the outcome of the product or service. They won't buy what it does.

Of course, it will need some time before you master this skill.

Important is to be aware and start using it.

4 U's in Headline

Unique. Useful. Urgent. Ultra-Specific.

I have learn this from the book Art of Click, but every copywriter uses more or less same technique.

Previously you read that at least 80% of people who land on your copy won't pass by your headline.

What can you do to make sure those 20% will stay?

Try to use 2-4 of the 4 U's, and more people will scroll to the button of your copy.

If not to the button, at least to the body.

Giuseppe Verdi in Your Lead

You don't have to write a hymn about the famous Italian composer.

What you should use in the lead of your copy is abbreviation of one of his operas.

AIDA.

Attention.

Interest.

Desire.

Action.

80 % of people will stop reading your content after reading your headline.

I don't know how many people will drop after reading your lead, but it is safe to say that great lead, will increase readability of your copy.

Regardless of your format, keeping AIDA as your pattern, while writing your lead, is vital for success of your copy.

Look below for how Brian Dean from Backlinko thinks uses this in his posts.

So What?

Asking this question after your sentence will make your copy specific.

If you use this question three times after each other without sufficient answer, you need to stop writing.

You see, most likely, what you've written, sucks.

Get some fresh air, cup of coffee or watch Netflix series and start again.

Some copywriters call this process, 3 strikes.

Same as in Baseball.

In ideal case, you want to use this in parts of your copy, where you'll be writing about benefits of the product or service. In that case, your sentences really need to be specific and "hit the target".

KISS Me And They'll be Happy And You Rich

Keep IShort (and) Simple is another saying that will help make your copy more powerful.

Especially, when it comes to online copy, people like to read short text.

Therefore, you'll see many creators choose for one sentences rather than long paragraphs.

  1. Q1: What are some of the most effective strategies for learning copywriting, and how can aspiring copywriters develop their skills and improve their craft over time?

Q2: How has the rise of digital marketing and e-commerce transformed the world of copywriting, and what new opportunities and challenges does this present for copywriters in today’s fast-paced, digital world?

    1. Hi Mohammad,

To answer to your questions, I would be happy to point out in one of the paragraphs on how to learn copywriting. The  best strategy is really to read, take a course and then practice. There isn’t really any advice rather than that. I always advise people not to search for shortcut, as there is none.

The answer on your second question is much more complex. Copywriting is offering a lot of new opportunities with the rise of digital marketing. Think of email newsletters, blog posts, landing pages, ads, etc. Also, to reach out to potential audience is much more direct than it was in the time of mailing post. However, this brings challenges, as  general public became more aware of being “sold” and is more immune to “one-time limited offers”. Also, fake gurus  digital marketing brought sort of distrust into the copywriting or affiliate marketing. On the other hand, I believe that honest, caring and skilled copywriters, will always have a place, regardless of the pace.
